Curiosity finished its testing at rock target “Bathurst Inlet” then drove 77ft/23.5m to arrive at a patch of wind-deposited soil named “Rocknest”. It is a potential target for the Sample Analysis at Mars #SAM tool. SAM will use three tools to seek the carbon-based compounds essential for all life, examining gases from samples heated in Curiosity’s on-board oven to 1800(f)/982(c) degrees and using a mass spectrometer and a gas chromatograph to sniff out carbon molecules.
