Felix has already served more than two decades of a life sentence without the possibility of parole at State Correctional Institute – Graterford, a maximum security prison outside of Philadelphia, PA. This sentence is referred to as “death by incarceration” by advocates since there is no hope of getting a second chance, even if the individual is completely reformed. (Prison regulations forbid showing the faces of offenders, which is why Felix is posed this way.) In prison, he created and now co-leads a group called Let’s Circle Up, devoted to the principles of restorative justice, an alternative approach to criminal justice that emphasizes doing everything possible to ameliorate the harm to victims and communities caused by crime. He is also in a long-term relationship with Barbie, a criminal justice reform activist, but the two of them cannot spend time together except in the visiting room at the prison. Although Felix desires nothing more than to contribute to his community and spend time with his loved ones, his chances of release rely on an extremely difficult appeal system or a rare act of clemency.
