Two little girls leave the bus and enter the Secure Female Facility of Hazelton…

Two little girls leave the bus and enter the Secure Female Facility of Hazelton Penitentiary, a federal prison in Bruceton Mills, West Virginia. Because Washington, DC does not operate a prison, offenders from the city are dispersed to locations far from their homes and their loved ones. The girls traveled more than four hours from Washington, DC to visit incarcerated relatives as part of a bus trip sponsored by the Washington, D.C., Mayor’s Office on Returning Citizens Affairs. Many families have no means to make these visits, and children are often separated from their parents for extended periods. Most criminal justice reform advocates believe that keeping offenders close to their families and reducing sentences would benefit children and communities and reduce recidivism.
