Tyra Johnson and her mother, Erica Johnson, fell asleep during the four-hour bus…

Tyra Johnson and her mother, Erica Johnson, fell asleep during the four-hour bus ride from Washington, DC to visit Tyra’s father, who is incarcerated at Hazelton Penitentiary in Bruceton Mills, WV. Because the District of Columbia doesn’t operate its own prison, offenders are dispersed into the federal prison system at locations all over the nation that are so far from their loved ones that it makes staying in touch almost impossible. The Washington, DC Mayor’s Office on Returning Citizens Affairs organized this bus trip to Hazelton Penitentiary, which enables children like Tyra to visit their incarcerated parents.
